The holiday island of Lanzarote has been a popular place with property investors for much of the last forty years. A number of reasons have earmarked this Canary Island as an ideal place in which to own a holiday home, not least the incredible climate.

Lanzarote enjoys low annual rainfall and has a year round average temperature of 73º C. These factors have made the island a viable winter sun destination within Europe which therefore creates an extended calendar of bookings for villa owners.

The other important aspect of the island’s character that makes it an attractive proposition are the tight controls governing all construction. Tourist development has been restricted to ensure that Lanzarote retains much of its unique appeal and beauty.

As a result, most of the property for sale in Lanzarote adheres to the strict criteria for buildings, namely that it is no taller than a mature palm tree. And that the exterior is painted white, with blue or green doorframes and windows.

This has created a cohesive and visually pleasing identity, which accounts for much of the island’s charm. And is often cited as one of the things that tourists are most delighted with, as the island’s unspoiled quality is often unexpected by visitors who have been to other Spanish destinations.

On the other hand, this type of regulation does not mean that all the houses look the same, as there is a huge variety of styles of property available. A visit to one of the resorts, for instance, will reveal that the holiday villas in Lanzarote come in all shapes and sizes.

Many properties on Lanzarote take their inspiration from locally born artist Cesar Manrique. Who pioneered the dominant aesthetic of the island during the late 1960’s and 1970’s, using volcanic rock and whitewashed plaster to great effect.

In particular, Manrique’s designs for swimming pools has led to rash of copies, as many properties have their own lagoon style pool similar to those at the artist’s former home and the Jameos del Agua. Numerous hotels have also followed suite in the layout of their gardens and outdoor spaces.

All in all, such uniformity creates a lovely backdrop for holidays in Lanzarote, regardless of where visitors stay. And this often accounts for the high number of tourists returning to Lanzarote for a second or third visit, such is the favourable impression the island makes.
