Help answer the question about big real estate

How can an average person make it big in residential real estate?
What I mean by this is, after working and saving some money from a previous career, how can you go about making a nice income in real estate? Should you get some type of related education and join a company? Would buying property and renting it out generate the most income?

How do some people do very well in this field of work and is it possible for the average person to make a high income from it?
